Let’s cap this off with a few other great examples illustrating that. That means that the spread radius you might specify in box-shadow is not one-to-one with the default spread value for drop-shadow, so the two are not equal replacements of one another in some cases. Update: Amelia identified another key difference in the comments where the spread of the radius for drop-shadow() is calculated differently than box-shadow and even that of text-shadow. In this tutorial I'm gonna show you how to create a long shadow 3D text effect in Premiere Pro only.Recently I went shopping in a German discount supermarket. There are other differences that distinguish the two in terms of browser support, performance and such, but the way the two treat the box model is the key difference. Close the dialogue box without changing the settings. This now sets the effect to those options. The difference between box-shadow and filter: drop-shadow() really boils down to the CSS box model. I love working with students on ear training, but there are many qualified teachers out there who will help you stay motivated.įine tuning your ears will allow you to be a more responsive musical partner, and to digest all the music you play more deeply. Having a practice buddy or teacher to help you improve has many benefits. ![]() Experiment with different learning techniques and write down what you observe. Utilise the ’pause’ and ’repeat’ buttons when learning music by ear from a recording, give yourself tiny sections to listen to again and again. Then try finding those one or two notes on your instrument, and work up to more notes in a row gradually over time. Is the second note higher or lower than the first? By a little or a lot? Identifying specific intervals can come later as you advance. No one starts out by learning all of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons by ear in one sitting instead try listening for and repeating one note at a time. Try evaluating what you’re hearing and compare two notes in a sequence. Break everything down into small pieces so that your ears are not overwhelmed Is music easier to learn if you sing it a million times first? The breadth of the parameters will depend on your individual learning style and level. ![]() You might also try learning just the rhythm of a piece, or just the pitches, rather than both at once. You could practise identifying notes on just one string, or within a certain octave so it is less overwhelming. If you are totally new to learning by ear you might want to start by listening to and thinking about one note at a time rather than large sections. Get into the habit of being patient with yourself, while still paying attention to how or where you can get better. Notice which tasks are easy or difficult, so you can focus your efforts where you need the most improvement. When learning something new, it is important to approach the activity with curiosity and an open mind. Embrace constructive criticism, let go of negative self talk Think about the musical qualities- is it fast or slow? How many parts or sections are there? What do you like or dislike about it? Singing along with your favourite music is another way to practise active listening and develop your ear, while helping with long term memory retention. Learning by ear is just like any other skill even if it doesn’t come naturally to you at first, there are things you can do to practise and get better at it. Thank goodness that’s not true! Learning music by ear can be an incredible way to improve your aural skills and musicianship. A lot of folks make the assumption that either you’re born with good ears, or you’re not. ![]() Step One: The defined categories you select become the "headings" for your training plan. Handling (Hand Signals/Whistle Commands). The plan utilized by the Wildrose Basic Retriever course includes six categories (core characteristics for a quality gentleman's gundog, which is our goal): Obviously, this list can be quite extensive. The skills are the individual commands, drills, concepts, responses and abilities the retriever will need to master in each defined subcategory. Subcategories are the component abilities of the dog to fulfill the requirements of the categories. The plan will be composed of three parts:Ĭategories are the overall desirable characteristics of the gun dog. With these outcomes clearly in mind, begin with the construction of a written plan by defining the major components involved in the training process that will best produce your desired results. We now have a realistic picture of the desirable characteristics of our hunting companion. Break down all skills into their individual components. ![]() Employ repetition to the point of habit formation. Now that you have listed your desired outcomes in writing, build your plan with the necessary elements that will enable you to: ![]() Once you have a realistic picture in mind, begin building your model composed of the necessary elements, which will give you the desired outcomes. What do you want from your gundog: competition, upland game, waterfowl, both upland game and waterfowl, companion dog, hunting companion, game tracker, flushing gundog, pointer, etc. Begin with a picture of the desirable qualities and abilities for your pup based on your expected utilization. The first step in the actual plan is for you to carefully define your expect outcome for your training process. They should reflect a teaching approach, not testing. If problems develop, simplify the exercise until success is achieved. Build the pup's confidence through successes. Once success is achieved, begin linking the skills together to form the concept or the desired outcome. Break down all concepts and skills into their simplest parts and teach them separately. How could I improve? Did my actions cause a problem? How was my patience? Did I read the dog correctly? Were my commands clear? Was I consistent? Self-reflection is equally as important as the focus on your dog.Ĥ. Document and evaluate each session from two perspectives: the dog's responses, attitude, success, problems, etc., and yourself as a handler and trainer. ![]() It's tempting to rush or avoid boring drills to "get to the good stuff." Don't! Master each step before moving to the next level.ģ. Moxon, a famous English retriever trainer and author. Then double the repetition to 20 days to insure the pup mastered the command or skill.)Ģ. (Example: If you think it should take five days to teach a skill, it will take 10. Then double that amount of time again to insure habit formation. Drill a command, skill or concept twice, as long as you think it should take to learn. If you randomly apply tips, concepts, drills, exercises or commands, confusion may occur or you may leave holes in your dog's development, which will become evident in later performance. Successful training is progressive learning achieved through consistent repetition of inter-related skills to the point of habit formation. What are you going to achieve? Are today's lessons building on previous exposures/successes? Do we see a natural progression even if we are working on problem areas? This is no place for random jumping about to a variety of drills you read about in your newest training magazine. Training plans must be flexible to account for these variables.Įach training session should be a planned, thought-out event. Dogs, like people, have different aptitudes, maturity, temperaments and attitudes. Also remember, what works for one gundog may not work for another. You may find yourself re-engineering and altering the sequence of things, adding steps, deleting unproductive drills, etc., over time, which is expected and proper procedure. The plan itself must be detailed, flexible and under constant evaluation. This is, of course, the way dogs learn behaviors. A progressive training plan actually promotes the dog's learning chain: sequenced thinking and learning built upon the successes of the former lesson or skill. It encourages the handler to proceed more slowly and not skip mastering important small steps, which may prove problematic later in training. It requires one to think in terms of causal relationships rather than individual drills or exercises. A training plan causes us to remain focused on skill development, to reflect and to document. We have all heard it said, "We don't plan to fail we fail to plan." This is one of those absolute truths that's true of retriever training, as well as life in general. ![]() Check out this free, online educational resource for understanding elemental groups from CK-12.Flip through this interactive periodic table of elements at.Watch this brief video about the periodic table and element groups, from Crash Course.Oganesson completes the seventh period of the periodic table, so if anyone manages to synthesize element 119 (and the race to do so is already underway), it will loop around to start row eight in the alkali metal column.īecause of the cyclical nature created by the periodicity that gives the table its name, some chemists prefer to visualize Mendeleev's table as a circle. Many chemists expect oganesson (previously designated " ununoctium"), one of the four newly named elements, to share these characteristics however, because this element has a half-life measuring in the milliseconds, no one has been able to test it directly. ![]() Noble gases: Colorless, odorless and almost completely nonreactive, the inert, or noble gases round out the table in Group 18. The table salt in your kitchen, for example, is a marriage between the alkali metal sodium and the halogen chlorine. The halogens are quite chemically reactive and tend to pair up with alkali metals to produce various types of salt. Halogens: The top four elements of Group 17, from fluorine (F) through astatine (At), represent one of two subsets of the nonmetals. These include carbon (C), nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), oxygen (O), sulfur (S) and selenium (Se). Nonmetals: Everything else to the upper right of the staircase - plus hydrogen (H), stranded way back in Group 1 - is a nonmetal. Metalloids are also called "semimetals" or "poor metals." These elements sometimes behave as semiconductors (B, Si, Ge) rather than as conductors. They form the staircase that represents the gradual transition from metals to nonmetals. Metalloids: The metalloids are boron (B), silicon (Si), germanium (Ge), arsenic (As), antimony (Sb), tellurium (Te) and polonium (Po). The post-transition metals cluster to the lower left of this line. Many periodic tables will feature a bolded "staircase" line below the diagonal connecting boron with astatine. These elements have some of the classic characteristics of the transition metals, but they tend to be softer and conduct more poorly than other transition metals. The post-transition metals are aluminum (Al), gallium (Ga), indium (In), thallium (Tl), tin (Sn), lead (Pb) and bismuth (Bi), and they span Group 13 to Group 17. ![]() Post-transition metals: Ahead of the jump into the nonmetal world, shared characteristics aren't neatly divided along vertical group lines. Many of the greatest hits of the metal world - including gold, silver, iron and platinum - live here. Hard but malleable, shiny, and possessing good conductivity, these elements are what you typically think of when you hear the word metal. Transition metals: Returning to the main body of the table, the remainder of Groups 3 through 12 represent the rest of the transition metals. The actinides and the lanthanides together form a group called the inner transition metals. Of these elements, only thorium (Th) and uranium (U) occur naturally on Earth in substantial amounts. The elements in this group have a silvery white color and tarnish on contact with air.Īctinides: The actinides line the bottom row of the island and comprise elements 89, actinium (Ac), through 103, lawrencium (Lr). This is the lanthanides, elements 57 through 71 - lanthanum (La) to lutetium (Lu). Lanthanides: The third group is much too long to fit into the third column, so it is broken out and flipped sideways to become the top row of the island that floats at the bottom of the table. Their chemical reactions typically occur more slowly and produce less heat compared to the alkali metals. But they're not as reactive as the alkali metals. Each of these elements has two electrons in its outermost energy level, which makes the alkaline earths reactive enough that they're rarely found alone in nature. Hydrogen, with its single electron, also lives in Group 1, but the gas is considered a nonmetal.Īlkaline-earth metals: The alkaline-earth metals make up Group 2 of the periodic table, from beryllium (Be) through radium (Ra). They are also extremely reactive and will burst into flame or even explode on contact with water, so chemists store them in oils or inert gases. Shiny and soft enough to cut with a knife, these metals start with lithium (Li) and end with francium (Fr). The periodic table of elements is arranged into several broad groups (Image credit: Future) Groups of the Periodic tableĪlkali metals: The alkali metals make up most of Group 1, the table's first column. ![]()
